Pomegrante phone :D

I can't stop cursing myself for having wasted (quite a lot of) my time in office while exploring the features of the "pomegranate phone". Eager beavers like me may feel free to explore it -> Pomegranate Phone
The video of this attractive ultra-slim, touch-screen smart phone with email, mp3 player, GPS navigation, camera and a video projector can easily delude the unwary. As the enthralled user digs around this highly flash-based web site, it leaves no doubt that it is just another gag-ad. In addition to the conventional features, it comes with a coffee brewer, instant harmonica, ready-to-use shaver, wireless charging and a global voice translator!! All in the palm of your hand. If you ever visit this site, don't forgot to check out the technology and accessories section. But who would take the pain of creating such an ambitious ad - an upcoming technlogy company or a research institute? This is nothing but a part of Nova Scotia's "Come to life" campaign. Now that clears out the mysterious model name "NS 08".
The most populous province of Atlantic Canada, Nova Scotia has used the media and social networking to market its tourism via this campaign. The site engrosses the viewer by making skepticism a vital part from the beginning of the tour of the site. However, the ad site and the actual campaign site are quite disparate and do not convey the idea to the average user.
Although the features displayed in the ad seems ludicrous at first glance, some of the ideas are not completely far-fetched. Ideas of phones with embedded projector and wireless charging are prospective and are in fact, already endorsed and implemented by certain companies like Blackberry and Motorola.
If this pomegranate phone does make its way into the market someday, I would definitely want to own one ;)

Election Day in Bangalore

Come April 23 and its time for the Bangaloreans to elect their next promising leader. Unlike previous polls, this election has some interesting campaign approach. I thought internet was the only domain unencumbered by politicians. Now, candidates have gone out of their way in infiltrating their propaganda onto the net by means of blogs, advertisements, social networks etc. It seems like a sudden paradigm shift. With the success of Obama's online campaign, many politicians have made an effort to make their online presence more felt. News channels on televisions have lost their charm as an increasing number of them are more active and articulate online.
I found this independent candidate's site - E. Sarath Babu (http://sarathbabu.co.in/in/), particularly impressive. Simple website and a simple election Manifesto. In fact, the election manifesto looks more like a business plan. Now thats how a professional works. Hailing from the slums of Madipakkam and graduating from BITS and IIM-A, Sarath Babu is a typical rags-to-rich story. His story has been documented in numerous sites and newspapers. So I will skip his introduction ;) He is contesting South Chennai as an independent candidate and seems headstrong in accomplishing his mission. He has caused a sensational fervor among the youngsters. For the past 2 weeks, there hasn't been a day or two, when I didn't receive an e-mail urging to vote for him. If only he contested in my constituency, I would have gone to Chennai and voted for him. It is a regrettable that I won't be able to cast my vote this time :( I remember the former youth-motivated political party, Lok Paritran, that contested in the 2004 elections (if my memory serves right). They started out with full fervor and invaded all the college campuses in the country. But lack of unity among some of the members caused some minor strife, which ultimately resulted in the dissolution of the party (Or are they still around?? I'm not aware of it). Probably, this is the reason why Sarath Babu is contesting as an independent candidate. I really appreciate his audacity. Wish we had more people like him. And can you imagine? If he does get elected, we can finally a well-educated, distinguished and young member in the government!!
Apart from the conventional campaigning strategies, online campaigning has taken a significant improvement with candidates or parties assembling supporters in some social networking sites like orkut and facebook. I have even seen party advertisements across some Indian sites. Who wants to see L.K. Advani covering quarter page of a site containing an interesting article!! Or the image of Mayawati with the tagline "Is she the 1st Dalit Prime Minister of India?" .. lol..
In fact, they have even started tweeting these days!! You heard me right.. politicians on twitter!! Some of the Indian politicians who have used twitter to keep their status afresh are Cpt. Gopinath - who even conducted an educational session at Yahoo! India last week, Shashi Tharoor, Mallika Sarabhai, Rajeev Chandrashekhar and a few others. But the real question here is whether they will be able to keep their tweets fresh or not.
Anyways.. enough of election talk. Wrapping it up for now.. Navz :)

Pretty 'banged up' in Bangalore

2009 has not treated me well… yet :) New Year has started with a series of unfortunate events in my life.
Well… not completely true..
First 2 days were totally fun because my best friend Priyankar had come to Bangalore and was great to spend time with him and his sister. After this started the bad times for this year...

First week at office was without any incidents... nothing special… just a regular week while a tiring on-call week awaits me
I was extremely busy during my on-call period this time, although there were very few alerts. Anyways, I hardly noticed Sankranti/Pongal tick by... :( Amidst all this, my roommate, Rashmi and I, however, made quite delicious fish fry all throughout the week for dinner ;) mouth-watering…

So Rashmi came home crying one evening after having visited our house-owner’s place for getting the rental agreement signed. Seeing her cry made my thoughts run wild.. Did he yell at her.. did he flirt.. did he ***?? :O Turns out that the almost 60yr old bastard tried to misbehave with her!! All this happened while his wife was in the kitchen!! What a freak... Over the next few days, she kept ignoring his calls. Then, out of the blue, she answered one of his calls and gave him a piece of her mind… On top of that, she recorded the entire conversation ;) Finally... some proof that it was not her fault.
Such an incident makes you question your own dignity and character… “What could have prompted this guy to say all this??” That will be the only question you keep asking yourself until you realize that most old men are really desperate! I have personally noticed old guys checking out young girls from head to toe... I mean.. hadh hai kisi bhi baath ki!!

A day after that incident, I start getting phone calls from an unknown number every night after 12.. The drunk bastard on the other end cant seem to say anything other than “Kya haal hai meri jaan..” Yuck.. sick! Wonder from which part of the world this scumbag is making calls from... what kind of number starts with a “+96”??!!!
This may be just a coincidence. But convinced both of us to move out of the house. Bangalore is not a safe place… So now… I am house hunting ;)

Yesterday was a Sunday and I, unfortunately, did not have any plans of going out and was willing to spend a day peacefully at home. But no... peace and my life seem to be asymptotic. What I thought was going to be a “just-another Sunday”, washing my clothes and eating the leftovers at home was completely turned upside down when I slipped and fell just outside the bathroom in my room. I felt like I was suspended in the air for a second and then THUD!! I came down hard on the marble floor. Severely hurt my lower back... Oh wait… but there is more..
As I got on to my feet, I was starting to black out. Everything looked hazy and then... completely dark... I vividly remember wondering why my vision was affected when I hurt my back and not my head. I felt like I had been doomed for life… I tried to calm myself and sat on my bed for about a minute… Then I was glad to see the things around me.. My vision is back. But ouch... my back really hurts. So I was lying on my bed... crying to myself.. Losing my sight for a few moments is extremely petrifying, esp. when I knew that no one was around to help me out :( After calming down for a while, I decided to dry my washed hair. And what do I see on the towel… BLOOD!! Aaahhh… :O

Ok I didn’t yell… but I did start crying again and quickly called up my cousin, Jhansi and told her about the incident. She was took me to the hospital nearby… Got a few stitches on my scalp... And came home in a not-so steady state. Sitting down and getting up seem to be quite a task now :(

As I tried to comprehend what happened yesterday, I don’t remember how I hurt my head. Perhaps I banged against the door? or the bed? No way to find out…

My teammates asked me to apply for sick leave.. So now I finally found time and content to update my blog ;)

Now..

Hope you guys understand what I meant by ‘banged up’ in my title… Don’t let your thoughts run wild. Just take the literal meaning people!! :)

Until next time... hoping to make things better in my life… signing out... Navz :)

2008... the year that was..

As I sit at my desk and think back about the things that have taken place this year, I realize that this has been the most happening year of my life. The following were the best moments in my life for the year 2008:
The Terror Ten’s (my school friends circle) maiden trip to Kishkinta on Jan 12 - I still remember the fight we almost got involved in, at the Tambaram bus terminus. Phew.. So close.. But the fun at theme park cleared away all the tension. This venture was only the beginning. Later, we went on more trips, which is worth a lifetime for me. :)
One day trip to Pondy on March 15 – Amidst the busy Final year Project schedule and deadline, we went on a trip to Pondy, chiefly organized and headed by Sabrish. It was a day full of masti in the beach sand and water. Do I remember bram having some trouble on the way to Pondy?? :P
Yelagiri May 23-25 – The terror ten strike again. This time, going on an overnight trip to Yelagiri. Nothing can beat the leisure and joy that we found there, living in a twin cottage and having nothing to worry about in the world.
Terror thanni Parties – The tradition of gathering at someone’s place and partying started at bram’s place on Dec 13, 2007. It was kept alive till June 08. Each of us took turns – Bram, Rinz, Me, Sab, Vidz, Anu, GP. Every single meet had its own significance which I cant describe in words. Hope to do it sometime soon in the future. I don’t see it happening in 2009 because everyone is one corner of the world trying to grab the crest of success. But I will always keep my fingers crossed.
The terror ten also got involved in rigorous workout session by playing “country-country” and kings at staff club (IIT) in the mornings. LOL.. oh dear.. It used to be so difficult to make it on time. I never did :P
And I can go on and on with our activities. But let me cover the other important things in my life too.
My birthday was a BLAST! Woken up by my college classmates (Aish, Janz and Prad) early in the morning with a delicious chocolate cake. That was a total surprise!! I had promised my college friends, the renowned Ass Mob, to treat them at Farm House. The gang is comprised of a variety of Azzzes – Shardha (Bonda), Saranya, Sharmi, Me, Ram, Badri, Vasa, Sandy, UK, PK, Kabi, Mohan, Suhail. Those guys robbed me that day at lunch!!. We tried to make a human-chain which read “ASS MOB”. Pictures turned out to be very...uh huh.. ;) Then we went on to party in my terrace. In the evening, it was time for the terror ten. This time, though, we went to Ascendas instead of yet another evening at Basera.
Ass Mob goes to Yercaud – Missing the train, waiting the whole day to catch a bus at night..Starting itself was a nightmare. But we finally made it to our hotel in Yercaud, Walked almost everywhere, fooling ourselves in the middle of the road, trekked up a small mountain… The MC (Mokkai Committee) rocks btw!!
Another small but memorable event was the Photo Walk along the IT corridor with Ram, UK and bonda. Didn’t know there was so much to capture on your cam by just taking a walk along the road.
College ended in April. But I feel anything but remotely attached to it. The only thing I remember was hanging around with my friends. Oh not to mention… Kurukshetra ’08! - The jumbo inter-collegiate technical fest orgainised by CEG. We achieved great success by putting up a good show in Jan.
Akshay, Vanuj, Simman and I struggled to keep our hostel office project alive. But in the end, it was all thrown away and the Hostel office in my college continues to cheat and mistreat the students.
My parents had bought an apartment in Madurai. So we had the house warming ceremony in June. Jhansi and I went around the Madurai city for the first time in our lives! Nothing much to see... But riding around an unfamiliar town with a broken scooty is an interesting experience.

Leaving behind all my friends and family, I left to Bangalore on July 1st to join my job @ Yahoo! India. I have had ups and downs in the past 6 months of my working life. Adjusting to the new surroundings and the new people was a little difficult. But do I have a choice? So I try to make the best out of my life in Bangalore. Thanks to my cousin Jhansi who lives close by. Can ‘t believe she got married this year (in Feb)!! But im very happy for her. I hang out with her and Jagan very often. Made good friends and we all went on a trip to Chikmagalur for 2 days in September. It felt good.
Yahoo! sponsored a day trek to Kalwarbetta in August. Got to know my batch mates a little better. The day I got my first pay-cheque , I wasn’t very happy. In fact, I was a little depressed and very anxious. It then occurred to me that I had all the responsibilities on my shoulder. and whats the use of all money when you don’t have your friends and family around? I never imagined I would be sad on receiving my first salary ever!! Still, life goes on.. and Yahoo! pay me well :P
Life in Bangalore is about eating out at different restaurants, shopping in the malls and watching movies in the theatre. These are the only economic way (well not always economic.. ) to kill your weekend in bangalore. On that account, I feel I have visited quite a few places in the 6 month period.
Restaurants I have visited in 2008 – Sahib Sindh Sultan, Filling Station, China Pearl, Imperial, Indijoes, Ballygunge, Kubay, Cascades, Farm house, barbeque nation,, heera panna, Oye Amritsar, Lazeez, Shiok, Hotel Royal Orchid, Mushroom, Magnolia, Hongkong hustle. The Beach

Last week, my parents and bro had come to visit me in Bangalore. We went around Forum, MG Road, brigade road and Commercial Street. I also arranged for a trip to the Innovative Film City with my parents. Though the place wasn’t worth the money, I was glad that I could afford it for my parents :)

Well .. That was 2008.. Just hoping for an even better year ahead.. ;)
Happy New Year all!!

Long time.. and im freeeeeeee today :)

Its 6.50pm and im still sitting in my cubicle. Don’t get me wrong. Im not working. Today was my first day at gym. So I missed my usual 5.30pm cab and waiting for the 8pm cab.
Yesterday, Yahoo! India laid off some of its employees in Bangalore in the name of cost-cutting. I knew one of the guys who got laid off. This place offers you so much that when it is finally taken away from you, you will realize how much luxury you were actually enjoying in the office. I think starting from clothing (except for our “chaddies” of course :P) to food company offers everything! I just hope the day doesn’t come when I might have to give up these joys. :)
So to quote it ..”Yahoo! is an amazing place to work… Its just like home “

So about this sensational “Mumbai terror attacks”... The hungama still continues. News channels are still not tired of reporting related information. If I may ask… why is it that only the attack on Mumbai is exaggerated?? All around the year, we have been witnessing such terror attacks. How come those lost favour with media? What kind of bias is this!! It just so happens that there were not many victims in those attacks. But do we judge the seriousness of an attack based on the number of casualities!! Is one person’s life more valuable than the other! And whats up with this Mumbai-wasi crying over this.. “Mumbai in Anger”.. Rubbish.. What good can come from anger anyways.. Rallies and protests… Does that really have an impact on anyone..The government is not bothered! The “buddhaas” sitting in the throne are least bothered about it. By the time they open their eyes to see what is happening in the nation, all will be gone.. All they want is a luxurious life till death embraces them.
Seriously... a better administration can be achieved if we can just impose an age limit on the politicians. After 60, retirement must be made compulsory. We have had so many presidents and prime minister who couldn't walk on their own! I mean... Come on!! The prime minister must be able to at least carry himself, if not carry the nation with him.. Kya zamaana aa gaya hai.. One voice or many voice.. it makes no difference.. The system is corrupt and weak from bottom-up. A politician must lead life like an average man. Security must be for the civilians and not the dying politicians. Ek minister ke liye traffic rukwa dena aur logoon ko tang karna.. Outrageous!!

Whats wrong in the youth leading the nation.. At least give us a chance! Innumerable parties and allies.. How can any one survive in this twisted politics.. who would want to venture out and get entangled into this ball of mess!!

With the economy soaring down and more people losing their jobs, im sure the politicians can do the generous act of stepping down from their position and filling the vacancies with the young who are in dire need of a job..

Today.. I have to admit it..
This country truly sucks man! (no comments about other countries since my own is full of shit!)

Journey back in time @ Heera Panna

Heera Panna..
The first thing i was reminded of was this song - "panna ki tamanna hai ki hira mujhe mil jaaye ..." While that song earned its fame in bollywood, the small restaurant hidden in the Church Street of Bangalore, definitely deserves a place in one of the top restaurants of Bangalore.

Image0108

The restaurant carries its name well. The setting is that of Mughal Ages with all the bearers wearing royal costumes. Looks like heaven has found its place on earth. Not only do the workers get to wear them, they provide the costume to the guests too in order to gel with the theme. Is that cool?
Food is also very good. Rates are moderate. When the ambiance is right, any food will taste good. Attached with a pub, the place is perfect. Only thing i found missing was hukkah :P
Being a very new restaurant, feedback forms are also presented very lavishly.

Image0106

I always wanted to write with a feather and ink bottle. I still remember using a crow's feather (which was easily available inside IIT campus) and ink bottle to write when i was in school :D for someone who wants to have a feel of a royalty, heera panna is a perfect paradise. A place where you can hang out with friends or family.
The only one thing i found out of place was the fork, knife and spoon that we used. Certainly, those were not available back those days.. were they?
Oh.. one piece of advice.. Don't forget to take your camera along with you :)
anyways.. all-in-all, i had perfect evening and i genuinely thank Pradeep for making this possible :) good choice prad! ;)

Terror Techie from Yahoo! India

Today' s hottest topic at our breakfast table was about this "terror techie", who was arrested yesterday by the Mumbai police for being involved in the Indian Mujahideen. Mohammad Mansoor Peerbhoy was employed at Yahoo! India in the Pune office as a software development engineer for the past one year. In fact, he was recruited by Zimbra Pvt. Ltd., which has now been acquired by Y!. The following article sparked off our conversation during breakfast:

terror-techie

He was the one who had sent all the terror emails regarding the bombings in India. The capture of these terrorists was no big news. But i believe all the hype was created when TOI mentioned the name of the MNC he worked for. TOI uses Yahoo's name just to create headlines or what? If not, then why havn't the names of other companies in which these terrorists were involved brought into picture!
Anyways, this is quite an example of how technology and knowledge can be misused. The shocking part of the news is that this person shows no remorse over his actions. I cant help but wonder why everyone is so obsessed with religious and communal differences. It's high time we forget these differences and move on with our lives.
Sometimes i feel these disputes happen just to make our life more interesting, instead of the usual monotonous life ;)
